Grey Plover

8th April 2006 - a bright but cold day - after spending an afternoon walking and enjoying a few beers in the local pub I walked out accross the beach and was glad I did. This is a Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) - and its the first one I've ever seen. It looks a bit like a young seagull but the legs are longer, bill shorter with white bars on its back easily seen when in flight.

The rocks between Newquay and Cei Bach often harbour some strange birdlife so its always worth a look - anyway - good start to the year after all.
